New Haven Public Schools

The New Haven Public Schools Board of Education is seeking an extraordinary, innovative superintendent to lead the school system as it continues its pursuit of excellence. The board is committed to collaboration, equity, growth and innovation. The ideal candidate should have high expectations for all students, the leadership skills to guide the school community in preparing its young people to become contributing citizens of the nation and the world, and a distinguished record of educational leadership experiences.

New Haven Public Schools (NHPS), located in New Haven, Connecticut, is a vibrant and diverse district of 22,319 students that is committed to standards of excellence in the classroom. Located on the northern shore of the Long Island Sound, New Haven is the second largest city in Connecticut with a population of over 129,000, and is 90 minutes' northeast of New York City. New Haven is the home of the Ivy League school Yale University, New Haven's biggest taxpayer and employer. Health care (hospitals and biotechnology), professional services (legal, architectural, marketing, and engineering), financial services, and retail trade also help to form a strong economic base for the city.

New Haven's 49 public schools are comprised of 32 elementary and middle schools, 13 high schools (3 of which are Transitional), and 2 additional transitional schools. The student body represents a diverse group of races, nationalities, religions and cultures: 43.6% Latino/Hispanic, 13.4% White, 38.8 % African-American, and 4.2% all others.

New Haven Public Schools has 3,200 full-time employees, an annual operating budget of over $370 million, and a nine-member school board that includes the Mayor of New Haven, 4 appointed members, 2 elected members, and 2 student representatives.

NHPS has been innovative in its reforms as evidenced by the New Haven School Change Initiative. The vision for New Haven School Change is comprehensive, collaborative and persistent reform and its three primary goals are:

* Eliminate the achievement gap by raising test scores to at least the state average.

* Cut the high school dropout rate in half.

* Make sure every student is academically prepared and financially able to go to college.
