A Day in the Life

The Model Maker II is a basic level position that supports in-house new product development by creating, fabricating and modifying machine components and prototype models according to engineering specifications. Work in a team oriented, fast paced environment and perform various machining tasks duties of routine nature under general supervision. Additionally, the Model Maker II is responsible for maintaining a clean working environment throughout the shop/department.

Responsibilities Include:

* Successfully performs all functions of a Model Maker I

* Constructs low to medium complex precision prototype components and models from raw stock materials to engineering specifications by operating various machining equipment such as Vertical Milling machines, lathes, surface grinders, saws and hand tools as well as various Computer Numeric Control (CNC) equipment

* Assemble prototype mock-ups to simulate new product appearance.

* Constructs low to medium complex tools, jigs and fixtures for assembly and manufacturing needs to meet production schedules and objectives under general supervision.

* Verify conformance of finish work-piece to specifications, using measuring and inspection tools as necessary

* Ability to hold tolerances and confirm Model specifications by verifying dimensions, clearances and alignment of machine components with precision measuring equipment (Micrometers, gauge blocks, dial indicators, etc.).

* Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, continuously improve, and learn new skills

* Ability to access prints by means of Creo/Windchill. or work from engineering drawings and written/verbal work instructions

* Utilize CAD/CAM software programs to produce prototype components from electronic drawings, 2D drawings, or verbal instructions. Create low complex CNC programs for the CNC Millers, CNC Lathes and Wire EDM machines.

* Participate in team modeling efforts to achieve prototype instruments and provide support to other department staff members

* Recommend optimum manufacturing approach for prototypes.

* Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; Work with manufacturer technicians to resolve issues.

* Maintain clean work environment by regular cleaning and upkeep

* Assist with safety area audits as well as support manufacturing operations process improvement efforts.

* Adhere and carry out all activities in accordance with all applicable SOP's and safety standards. Identifying and correcting conditions that affect employee safety; upholding safety standards.

Must Have: Minimum Qualifications

* Technical High School or Journeyman License (Machinist/Toolmaker/model maker) and 3 years relevant experience

* High School Diploma/GED and 5 years relevant experience

* 3-5 years applicable experience needed

* Knowledge and application of machining, tool building, 2D CAD/CAM proficiency, preferably with Creo, MasterCAM or ESPRIT.

* Competent in basic Milling, Grinding, Lathe, CNC, Wire EDM, EDM sinker skills and prototyping methodologies

* Manufacturing methods, mathematics, materials

* Computer skills (MS Office Suite) CAD/CAM


Physical capabilities to perform the job

* Have the ability to lift and carrying of 25-50 lbs.

* Frequently is required to use hands to operate machinery, hand tools and perform repetitive tasks

* Regularly possess manual dexterity to put parts or pieces together quickly and accurate


* Machine shop and office environment
