A Day in the Life

A R&D Engineer will report directly to a Surgical Innovations (SI) R&D Manager within the Minimally Invasive Therapies Group (MITG) and will work with a cross functional core team to design, develop, test and commercialize medical devices. Candidates should be highly motivated and willing to produce innovative solutions to adapt to change.

Responsibilities Include:

* Supporting medical device design and development within the R&D Surgical Instrumentation Group from pre-concept through commercialization.

* Developing and maintaining CAD models, assemblies and Bill of Materials (BOM) utilizing Creo and Windchill.

* Performing analytical modeling / analysis in support of meeting design requirements

* Designing & developing prototypes using breadboards and/or rapid prototyping

* Collaborating with Operations on DFM & DFA and incorporate into device design

* Adhering to Model Based Definition (MBD) objectives

* Creating detailed component and assembly drawings utilizing GD&T and adhering to ASME Y14.5M- 2009

* Working with outside suppliers on material selection and specifications for components, subassemblies and finished assemblies.

* Participating in pre-clinical in vivo labs, observing cases in hospitals and through customer interactions.

* Participating in FMEAs (Design & Process), Usability Analyses, and follows up on generated recommendations

* Presenting information and effectively communicating with the cross functional core team

* Generating and documenting intellectual property while working with the Legal Department.

* Researching and integrating new technologies and processes

* Adhering to all Medtronic safety policies and procedures


Must Have: Minimum Qualifications

* 3+ years of product design and development experience

* Proficiency with 3D Modeling Software (PTC Creo preferred), ability to create well-structured components, assemblies, and drawings

* Experienced in performing Tolerance Stack Analyses

* Design and build breadboards of concepts and working prototype models of devices using rapid prototyping resources (3D printing, SLA, CNC machining, and injection molding).

* Ability to troubleshoot and perform route cause analysis on prototypes and production devices

* Knowledge of and application of drafting practices, GD&T, ASME drawing standards

* Understanding of component manufacturing and assembly methods and their impact on device design.

* Ability to apply a diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices to solve technical problems, then work as an integral member of a team to propose and discuss solutions

* Discipline to adhere to schedules and tasks based on instructions/guidance from engineering leadership.

* Ability to manage a varied workload, exhibit strong written and verbal communication skills and interface effectively with others in the project team

* Proficiency in Microsoft Office - Outlook, Word, Power Point, and Excel

Nice to Have:

* Six Sigma (DFSS) or DRM experience

* Working knowledge of Minitab

* Experience with pre-clinical animal models

* Experience with CREO Simulate and Mechanism, or ANSYS

* Experience with CREO Sheet Metal

* Experience with CETOL 6?? Tolerance Analysis Software, Monte Carlo simulations
