The position reports to the Manager of Financial Reporting and Accounting responsible for all aspects of the month end general ledger close process and related financial reporting for Yale - New Haven Hospital. Key aspects of the job include development and documentation of procedures and standard processes to maximize efficiency of the month end and year-end close process. It is most important for this position to fully understand Lawson general ledger and related accounting systems/subsidiary ledgers as it relates to the financial close process. This includes an understanding of both the Lawson and Operational systems (as well as report writers) and how key files and subsidiary ledgers are updated to the general ledger. Ensure the month-end process is properly documented and accounted for under GAAP, including the coordination of general ledger account analysis and key analytics, reconciliation of subsidiary ledgers and proper accounting/reporting of accounting data for Yale-New Haven Hospital. Work as liaison between key departments to coordinate and enhance the timeliness and receipt of accounting data, working to improve and document this process Further duties will include providing accounting, financial, analytical and developmental support in the preparation of monthly and quarterly financial statements, sundry reports and internal scorecard information for the operations of the Yale-New Haven Hospital. Additionally, utilize internal financial suite software to develop and implement financial information that will produce more effective and efficient reporting to administration and department heads. This position will also be responsible to coordinate, compile, and analyze the scorecard information for the Accounting group and the monitoring of ongoing projects. This process will culminate each month with a summary report to Accounting Management on status and areas of concern. In conjunction with the above, this position will assist in the development and monitoring of a plan to effect cross training across the Accounting group. Ability to document processes, analyze control point, and effectively communicate are key requirements for this position.


  • 1. Process through Lawson recurring and macro generated entries, including files received but not limited to, Yale University, telephone and engineering.
  • 2. Perform and supervise month-end close checklist to ensure all routine entries are posted to general ledger, accuracy of postings and adequate support is provided.
  • 3. Spearhead the review, recommendation and implementation of improved month-end close process. Refine methodology and process for month-end close items.
  • 4. To enhance and document a more detailed close process, make recommendations and implement and oversee improvements as well as prepare an Operational Procedures Manual for financial reporting and general accounting.
  • 5. Review recommendations from outside consultants and Internal Audit, form a committee with the appropriate personnel, put an action plan together with detail steps and timelines, and lead the initiative to implement the recommendations.
  • 6. Improve the overall interim and year-end process with our external auditors. This includes overseeing the process and meeting weekly (as necessary) with the other entity's primary contacts (ASC, YORK, and HSC). This also includes maintaining a detailed operating agreement that manages the audit with E&Y participation and agreement of the terms and conditions agreed-upon prior to the commencement of the audit procedures.
  • 7. This position will also focus on financial system maximization, such as access to online Financial Institution statements to enhance the timeliness of the month-end close process and move the majority of month-end work to mid-month and the use of Crystal reports to create standard analysis.
  • 8. Ensure adherence to internal controls over the month-end close process.
  • 9. Work with management to identify and recommend solutions for control gaps and process inefficiencies.
  • 10. Responsible for ensuring that subsidiary ledgers balances are accurate and accounted for in general ledger.
  • 11. Coordinate the preparation and evaluate all pertinent financial data related to the feasibility of introducing new and revising existing services and reporting for the position's respective responsibilities.
  • 12. Review processes and operations to avoid duplication of efforts between related departments.
  • 13. Participates in and supports customer relations policy and programs.
  • 14. Performs other related duties as required by the Manager of Financial Reporting and Accounting.
  • 15. Using our internal financial software, improve accounting, timing, quality and effectiveness of reports
  • 16. Update and analyze monthly department scorecard.
  • 17. Update and analyze monthly shared projects scorecard (Accounting, Procurement, OR, etc)
  • 18. Effectively present scorecard findings to Accounting Management.

Bachelor's degree in Accounting required. CPA preferred.


Three to five years' accounting experience is required and substantial experience in the preparation and interpretation of financial reports and inventory accounting. Solid experience in computerized financial applications is necessary.


Excellent analytical and communication skills. Strong personal computer background. Ability to research and interpret accounting and health care industry standards.
