The Referral Coordinator/Medical Assistant is responsible for coordinating specialty care for patients in need of external consultation as requested by the primary care physician. The Referral Coordinator/Medical Assistant will also be responsible for scheduling, tracking, referral case management and providing reports. The Referral Coordinator will represent the company professionally and positively to enhance and promote the core values, always exercising utmost discretion, diplomacy and tact in customer interactions. The Referral Coordinator/Medical Assistant works under the primary supervision of the Nurse Manager and general supervision of the Medical providers.


o High school graduate or GED equivalent.

o Medical Assistant (MA) certification preferred with two years of experience as a MA in a family practice outpatient setting including experience with pediatric and adult patients.

o Must respect patients' rights to privacy and confidentiality.

o Experience working with PC based computer operations.

o Must be detailed oriented and good organizational skills.

o Knowledge of EMR software


o Reviews details and expectations about the referral with patients

o Demonstrates excellent patient relations skills on the phone and in-person, e.g. smiles, cheerfully greet patients, engages all patients in a genuine, warm and caring manner.

o Ensure complete and accurate patient demographics and current insurance information.

o Collect data to track in-network referrals and measure retention efforts

o Ensure that referrals are addressed in a timely manner

o Responsible for completing referrals for providers.

o Expedited patient referrals to specialty offices, faxed medical records, answered patient and specialty office calls and completed referral requests.

o Ability to work independently and unsupervised maintaining a superior work ethic.

o Called insurance companies for patients to obtain benefits and precertification.

o Established a close working relationship with diagnostic imaging centers to facilitate urgent scheduling of MRI's and CT Scan's for high risk patients.

o Knowledgeable with CPT codes. High level of proficiency relating to medical terminology and strong healthcare background.

o Excellent computer skills.

o Prioritized work load and maintained an organized work space.
