A Day in the Life

This position is responsible for the direct management of high-tech product development projects involving teams with a broad range of cross-functional departments, potentially including numerous and diverse outside vendors. Projects managed by a Project Manager can range in scope from medium complexity to large high growth potential breakthrough or platform scale development opportunities managed domestically and / or internationally. Additional project types include pre-concept / early development projects and post commercialization product related projects. Job assignments and corresponding responsibilities will be generally based on years of experience and skill sets.


Project Initiation

* Ensures program scopes include global input from all functional areas including Marketing, Clinical, Sales, Training, R&D, Operations, Quality, Legal, Regulatory, and Purchasing

* Works with functional management to resolve ambiguous requirements

* Works with functional management to ensure that the best team structure and members are identified

* Ensures sufficient and appropriate resources will be made available

* Identifies key stakeholders and understands their expectations for a successful project

* Supports project teams to prepare initial PDT (Project Decision Team) presentations and formally enter the Product Development Process (PDP)

Project Planning

* Works directly with teams to ensure customer requirements are defined and unambiguous

* Includes stakeholder requirements such as COGS and manufacturability

* Develops work breakdown structures and identify key deliverables

* Estimates task durations

* Develops dependency diagrams among tasks

* Incorporates Design for Six Sigma Tools (DFSS) where needed

* Builds integrated schedules and budgets

* Optimizes schedules to identify critical path(s) and include major risks

* Publishes and gains agreement on the baseline integrated schedule

* Ensures integrated plans address PDP stage exit deliverables

Project Execution

* Drives teams to execute on tasks and deliverables

* Monitors progress on schedule, budget and technical output

* Develops a sense of urgency when key deliverables are jeopardized

* Facilitates problem solving and meetings to address obstacles

* Holds team members accountable to program commitments

* Relies on team member expertise when faced with critical decisions

* Evaluates change requests and prepares impact analysis for team and PDT consideration

* Facilitates communication to key stakeholders on project performance

* Proactively manages risks and employs strategies to address

* Provides coaching and training to teams on Project Management best practices

* Fosters teamwork; strives to maintain an environment of openness and trusta

Must Have: Minimum Qualifications

Education Required:

* Bachelor's degree in Engineering and/or scientific discipline

Experience Required:

* Required: 8+ years of experience driving product development projects

* Required: Project management experience in a stage-gate system

Preferred Education:

* Master's degree in Engineering, and/or scientific discipline, MBA

Preferred Experience:

* Project management experience with international teams and engineering service providers


* Project management skills, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, negotiating; managing change; goal setting; planning and organizing teamwork; ability to address difficult situations; able to understand technical information

* Ability to manage teams comprised of individuals with diverse backgrounds; including but not limited to instrument and disposable, Software, Regulatory, Hardware, Manufacturing, Quality Assurance and Marketing.

* Experience managing complex medical technology development programs. Exposure to systems engineering, concept engineering, QFD, hardware and software development, validation and systems integration would be preferred.

* Technically savvy; must be able to discuss, understand and make decisions regarding a wide array of engineering disciplines and complex technical/logistical issues.

* Must possess managerial courage; must be confident managing risks and making decisions that will likely have a large impact on organizational objectives.

* Expert-level skills using the tools and techniques of Project Management. Must have successfully managed multiple projects from conception through commercialization. PMP certification would be highly desirable.

* Ability to interact effectively with customers and Marketing to ensure that project scopes and requirements are clearly defined and executable. Must possess the communication and personal skills required to resolve ambiguous and conflicting requirements.

* Must have leadership skills and personal strength to protect programs from unsubstantial change request while ensuring project focus remains in place.

* Preferred: Successfully lead a medical device project from concept to market

* Preferred: Successfully executed project in FDA regulated industry

* Preferred: Project management experience in product claims projects and / or pre-product development (technology development) projects

* Preferred: PMP Certification

Other Skills:

* Demonstrated strong planning and organizational skills.

* Works independently; self-directed.

* Excellent interpersonal and influence skills including evidence of managing multi-disciplined teams, conflict resolution, resource constraints and problem solving.

* Strong written communication skills.

* Strong Microsoft Project, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word skills.

* Experience, familiarity and demonstrated successful coordination with functional departments (Legal, Regulatory, Operations, Procurement, Clinical Affairs, Operations, Marketing, etc.).
