A Day in the Life

The PrincipalResearch and Upstream Development Engineer in this Exploration role is responsible for theapplication of technology to achieve demonstration level prototypes fulfillingunmet clinical needs. Needs are determined through extensive backgroundresearch and clinical observations. In addition to their clinical and technicalknowledge, the engineer will work within teams to strategically evaluate andpresent opportunities based on financial metrics, evolution of newtechnologies, and clinical approaches. Starting from ambiguously definedclinical topics, the development engineer will succinctly communicate welldefined user needs, the state of clinical evidence, and provide tangiblerecommendations needed to advance prototypes into the surgical productdevelopment pipeline.

The Principal Research and Upstream Development Engineer uses broad experience and high technical proficiency to executeprojects on a variety of clinical procedure topics. This will includefunctioning as team member, technical resources, and at times provide directmanagement of others.

Typical functionsessential to this position are as follows:

* Conceptual designs for new medical products.

* Designs studies to investigate specific life science questions within fields of expertise.

* Involved in product research and development and/or clinical trials.

* Translates research discoveries into marketable products concepts.

* Determine user needs through direct clinical observation and discussion.

* Conceptualize solutions and test them against user needs.

* Contract with external resources for prototype development as needed.

* Document critical information within presentations, memos, protocols, reports, and patent applications.

* Contribute to project scoping, planning, budgeting and schedules.

* Mentor and develop junior engineers.

* Comply with all company policies and procedures.

* Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly work area.

* Demonstrate drive for results, creative problem solving, effective teamwork and communication.

Must Have; MinimumRequirements

* Bachelor's degree Mechanical related field with 7 years' experience, OR Master's degree with 5 years of experience, OR Ph.D. with 3 years of experience required

* Proven aptitude and strong innovation in an engineering field applied to medical products.

* Experienced in determining user needs through direct observation and discussion.

* Experienced designing, developing, and qualifying medical products.

* Experienced with design and prototyping tools, materials and technologies.

* Experience determining engineering specifications and test requirements.

* Working knowledge of ISO technical standards and FDA regulations.

* Experienced in working with cross-functional teams.

* Experienced in developing intellectual property.

* Some experience using financial tools.

* Knowledge of adjacent engineering fields.

* Meets vendor credentialing requirements to gain hospital access.

* Travel 20% of time

Nice to Have

* Advanced degree in engineering

* 3 years medical devices development

* Basic knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.

* Knowledgeable of some surgical procedures and techniques.

* Experienced in medical device development

* Experience developing product portfolio plans
