The position involves working in the Materials and Processes Lab as the lead for Metallurgical Analysis, Plating, Chemical Cleaning, Heat Treating and Special Processes. Analytical techniques such as wet chemistry, micro-sectioning, microstructural identification, SEM/EDS, XRF, XRay, tensile and compression testing, digital imaging microscopy, and micro-hardness will be used for determining the root cause of failures or to implement material or process changes internally or by suppliers. Material or supplier obsolescence is not uncommon and involves working on process variables with engineering, quality, and operations to validate new suppliers or improve process variables.
Materials and Processes is a service group, and a Center of Excellence for United Technologies Aerospace Systems and as such requires interaction with the various internal customers, other United Technologies facilities (for whom we regularly perform failure analyses), customers and suppliers.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • In addition to M&P; responsibilities, the candidate would be the Engineering Lead for the plating and heat treat departments at the site.
  • Summary reports, test results, and conclusions for root cause analyses are commonly written following failure analysis, material or process changes.
  • Follow through with the implementation of corrective actions, and proof of process.
  • Metallurgical support of first article inspections for new materials and processes is required.
  • 5+ years of experience within Metallurgy
  • The applicant should have metallurgical knowledge with experience in plating, heat treatment of metals, metal cleaning, and some knowledge of special processes such as welding, precision cleaning, degreasing, and soldering.
  • Experience in failure analysis and root cause / corrective action is a primary requirement.
